Oh-so proper British agent John Steed (Fiennes) is assigned to work with Dr. Emma Peel (Thurman), a scientist who until recently was working on a weather control experiment. It seems that someone has been tampering with the climate. Steed and Peel suspect metereological nutcase, Sir August DeWynter (Connery) could be the culprit, so they set off to trap the madman before he can ruin London's weather - making it even worse than usual.

THE AVENGERS is little more than a few cool-looking production designs in search of a story. Unfortunately, there is no sign of a coherent story connected to this goofball disaster movie (with the emphasis on 'disaster'). The blame lies mostly with 2 people: writer Don MacPherson (ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS) acts like an absolute beginner with his inane script. The disjointed storyline, such as it is, is tied together by stilted, incomprehensible dialogue and a running 'joke' about British teatime. To make matters worse, director Jeremiah Chechik (BENNY & JOON) has no idea what to do with this ham-fisted script or his actors. I suspect that in the course of hacking, I mean editing, this celluloid catastrophe, he inadvertently cut out all the bits that might have made sense - oops!
* A boom mike with red tape is visible in DeWynter's greenhouse scene, and in the scene where Emma Peel plays the piano.
* The fake snowflakes on Steed and Peel's hands and face don't melt.
* Peel's outfit magically changes between the time of her capture and escape. Perhaps her captors kindly provided an extensive and fashionable wardrobe in repayment of the inconvenience.
* The chess moves between Steed and Peel are exactly the same as those between Roy Batty and Eldon Tyrell in BLADE RUNNER.
