THE PRINCESS BRIDE is a brillinat fractured fairytale from the mind of author/screenwriter William Goldman. Thinking that her true love, Westley (Elwes), has perished, Buttercup (Wright) accepts a proposal of marriage from Prince Humperdink (Sarandon). When Westley reappears - very much alive - the situation becomes extremely complicated. The Prince and evil Count Rugen (Guest) need to dispose of Westley in order to carry out a nasty little political plot involving Buttercup. To this end they hire a dastardly but charming trio, including Inigo (Patinkin), a drunken Spanish swordsman bent on revenge.

Although sorely overlooked upon its theatrical release, THE PRINCESS BRIDE has gained a wide following through video over the years. With Goldman's sharp, witty script and some wonderful comic timing by director Rob reiner (THIS IS SPINAL TAP, A FEW GOOD MEN) this is a masterpiece of understatement which can be savored time and again. Although not big names, the entire cast are perfect in their respective roles, and Reiner even manages to squeeze in a couple of cameos by Billy Crystal and Peter Cook. A good disk transfer, along with Mark Knopfler's dreamy guitar soundtrack is the icing on the cake.
* Inigo's sword was used again in THE CROW.
* Rob Reiner's cap from SPINAL TAP shows up, hanging on the back of the boy's bedroom door.
* While preparing to read the story, the Grandfather opens up the book twice.
* During their swordfight above the Cliffs of Insanity, Inigo and the Man in Black sometimes cast two shadows (from the studio lights).
