The Talented Mr. Ripley

THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY
Rated R for violence and language
Starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cate Blanchett

CineSight Rating ***

Tom Riple (Damon) is certainly talented - talented at lying, forging, impersonating and possibly also murder. A wealthy businessman hires Ripley to go to Italy and persuade his wayward, hedonsitic son, Dickie Greenleaf (Law), to return home. However, Ripley takes a liking to Dickie's lavish lifestyle, and to his girlfriend, Marge (Paltrow) - a particlularly unhealthy liking that leads him into a nightmarish game of cat-and-mouse with the Italian police.

CineSight Comments and Trivia

RIPLEY is a taut, unusual thriller which plays through the eyes of its charming but deadly perpetrator. Anthony Mingella (THE ENGLISH PATIENT) does another fine job of directing the excellent cast, leaving us constantly wondering just how far the nefarious Ripley will go. Indeed, even after the final credits roll, we're still left wondering.

The modest disk package contains a number of interesting additional features, most notably the interviews with Minghella and his stars, and the behind-the-scenes material. While it may not quite be on the 'must have' list, it's certainly worth more than one rental.

* The date on Dickie's suicide note is director Minghella's fifth birthday.

* Jude Law previously played a similarly disaffected wealthy young man in GATTACA.
