Jackie (Bannen) and Michael (Kelly) are two old friends who live in the tiny Irish village of Tullymore. Like everyone else in town, they faithfully play the lotery every week. But this particular week the newspaper announces a local winner, so Jackie and Michael set out to discover which of the village's fifty-two residents it is.

After much sly investigation they deduce it must be a local fisherman, Ned Devine. However, Ned promptly died from the shock of winning, the ticket still in his hand. Jackie is convinced that Ned wouldn't want the money to go to waste, so he and Michael concoct a little plan to claim the prize money. As often happens, what began as a simple scheme soon snowballs into a massive charade, not only to gain the money, but also to keep out of prison.

CineSight Comments

The highlight of this disk is the film itself; a gentle, good-natured story of two good old boys gone astray. It is undoubtedly a 'character' movie, carried with style, charm and wit by Bannen and Kelly. Beautiful locations and a great score add to an almost fairytale quality, turning a small simple movie into something much more memorable.
